The Leshan Giant Buddha is a 71-meter (233 ft) tall statue of Buddha located at the confluence of the Minjiang, Dadu, and Qingyi rivers in the southern part of Sichuan province in China.

In 1991, China built the world’s tallest statue of Buddha. It is located in Leshan City and it stands at an unbelievable height of 563 feet (172 meters). Why would anyone build such a big statue? 

What was its purpose? Why did they choose a Buddha as the subject? The answers can surprise you. It wasn’t just any old Buddha who rose above Leshan. The giant statue of Buddha, called “Big Buddha” is the world’s tallest statue of Buddha. 

It has been built in Lushan County, Henan Province, and completed on February 9th, 2019. This big statue of Buddha is about 120 meters high and it has been built at the Tianlong Mountain Scenic Spot. The most amazing thing about this big statue of Buddha is that it was built within only one year by a team of 10 thousand workers who worked day.

I believe the purpose of building the Leshan Giant Buddha is to promote peace, balance, and harmony. Prior to this project, Leshan had a deep history of war. We can see this through the multiple war monuments scattered around the city. 

The giant buddha was built in an effort to find peace after the war. The buddha is built with the head located at river level, which symbolizes peace. This sculpture also has a calming effect on visitors. It was also created to share the balance of yin and yang.

He didn’t see anyone or speak with anyone throughout that time because he had became obsessed and dedicated to making it a reality. The feeling still remains bright in my mind today as if I was living in his shoes, that same passion and dedication still resides inside me.
